I have never, ever heard of this before, but I recently read on a few medical sites that many hospitals do not allow makeup or nail polish if you are having a C-section. I'm hoping for a VBAC, but there is about an 80% chance I will need a C-section and I have never heard of this rule before now. Apparently, the surgery team needs to be able to monitor your coloring throughout the procedure and makeup and nail polish interferes with this.

I had a c-section with my first and I had gel nails on and probably makeup from the day before (it wasn't a planned section). They didn't seem to care about any of that.

It wasn't a big deal for me. ours makes you wash 2hrs before your scheduled section with special soap to help prevent infections anyways. This is my third, I usually just wear sweats to the hospital anyways bc you have to dress in a gown for surgery.

I was only ever told no lotions or deodorant. I had a planned (scheduled Csection) in mid August with my 2nd daughter and was so tan....so if they based it a medical purpose as checking your color it most likely wouldn't have mattered! I was so dark! I wore make up and had nail polish on my newly pedicured feet. They never once mentioned no make up or polish. Maybe different hospitals or doctors have different requests.

Also, ask your OB. My OB is always honest and up front. The paperwork I received at my first appt (3rd pregnancy- same OB office) limits certain items for food. My doctor did not necessarily agree. She said - you're a healthy Mama- limit but you don't have to completely avoid.

I wonder if it is similar rules to the D& C I had this summer. They told me I couldn't wear any makeup, and not even body lotion! I had to take a shower before we drove the hospital and could only use antibacterial soap and nothing else. They told me it had to do with trying to reduce infections during surgery. I surprised because I didn't understand how lotion on my arms or face could affect the surgery, but of course I followed the rules!

Im a surgeon- i will tell u this - its better to not have makeup or nailpolish on for those reasons exactly. But in cases of emergency , trust me- we have ways of removing nailpolish and makeup quickly amd wasily in the OR and it will be done whether u like it or not if its to save ur life or ur babies life!!!! Its the last thing that u should be concerned about!! They wont turn u away or refuse care for some makeup or nailpolish issue :-)

I think this applies for any kind of surgery. I know they look at your nail beds because that can indicate if your oxygen is low. I have had a couple of surgeries and I went with no nail polish and light make up just a little foundation, mascara, and lip balm

@Rieslingbamko,
It was never on any of my surgery prep list. It mentioned showering before surgery with antibacterial soap only, no lotions and no deodorant. It may be different depending on the hospital.
I also had a breast augmentation at age 25. My plastic surgeons prep list did mention no make up or nail polish. For my scheduled csection the no make up or nail polish was not mentioned. Different doctors- also different hospitals.
I would recommend asking your OB about this and see what they tell you

I didn't wear polish but I did put a little foundation, concealer and blush on lol. I know it's ridiculous but I knew pictures were going to be taken and I really wanted to look at them later and not cringe. It wasn't a problem no one said anything.

Ive had three c sections. The first was unplanned so there wasn't anything said. For the planned ones, I had to wash before hand with the Sanitizing soap. I did have nail polish on...I don't think I was ever told not to wear that. However, I definitely didn't bother with make up. I did that afterwards.
The one thing they were very strict on was no jewelry or contacts in. I got nervous about the jewelry bc my ring was kinda stuck on so they basically brought me soap and said make it happen.
