Hey ladies,
The admissions nurse called me yesterday and went over a bunch of information. She said no nail polish....I just got a manicure haha. Do you think I need to take it off? Or will they take it off there? What about toe nail polish...
help!

This will be my third c/s...I have never heard this. Now i'm curious as to why. No acrylic nails I understand because they harbor SOOOO much bacteria....but nail polish?

They told me this when I had surgery for my endometriosis. I guess so they can watch your circulation. I would hate to take it off if I just got a manicure!

My sister had her finger nails painted like a week before her c-section. Nobody ever mentioned anything about nail polish. In the pics of her the day after her LO was born she's wearing nail polish so I'm guessing either they left it on or she re-painted them the next morning.

I wondered if they would tell you no nail polish during a c-section..... they do during any other surgery. I think its so they can make sure your nails pink up after pressure to ensure circulation.... or something along those lines. I was put under gen. anestesia for minor surgery once and they said no nail-polish period, i took it to mean my toes as well.

I have an answer!! When you are in surgery, they monitor your oxygen levels with a pulse oximeter...that little thing they stick on the end of your finger. They do not work with polish on. I would imagine that if you went in with painted nails they would only remove the polish on one finger, also some lighter shade are okay depending on the monitor they use. Hope this helped and good luck to you!!!!

I'd leave it on. Some docs are really particular, some aren't. It's to check circulation (since blue nail beds are often an early signal) but they'll take it off if they want it, I'm sure

I'm an L&D RN and the pulse oximeter that other people have mentioned is the reason. Sometimes the oximeter will work with the polish and sometimes it doesn't. I certainly wouldn't take your polish off. We have nail polish remover at the hospital and can take it off one finger if necessary if it's not working. Your toe polish is fine.

this. It will depend on your anesthesiologist. They may or may not care. If they do, they can take it off for you on one finger. They could also put it sideways on your finger and still get an accurate reading without taking off the polish. I'd leave it for now.
