The Toyota Highlander Hybrid offers the best features of a midsize family SUV with the fuel economy of a compact. It doesn't cost much more than the non-hybrid Highlander, although it does give up some ability in max towing capability. Over the years, the Highlander Hybrid grows larger and more capable, but all models offer the same basics, including a choice of front-wheel or all-wheel drive, excellent safety and reliability scores, and a high level of owner satisfaction.

Toyota Highlander Hybrid (4th Generation: 2020 - Current)
Key Improvements: The fourth-generation Highlander Hybrid sees several upgrades over the model it replaces. There's more interior space and a better infotainment setup featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Larger touchscreen options, an available digital rearview mirror camera, as well as more places to recharge devices. You’ll find more standard safety systems, part of the Toyota Safety System (TSS) suite that includes adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights. Additional safety systems like a blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic assist are offered on more trims, and the standard content is improved across four possible trim choices: LE, XLE, Limited, and Platinum. The hybrid powertrain loses the V6 in favor of a more fuel-efficient but less powerful 4-cylinder gas engine.
Model Updates: For 2021, the Highlander Hybrid gains an upgraded TSS 2.5+ driver-assist suite with more features like intersection assist and emergency steering assist as standard on all trims. LED headlights have become standard, too. The 2022 model year sees the debut of the Bronze Edition trim, while the 2023 Highlander gains a 12.3-inch touchscreen on the Bronze Edition and power folding mirrors on Limited and Platinum trims. For 2024, the Bronze edition departs, while the Nightshade edition is now available on the LE and XLE trim levels.
Toyota Highlander Hybrid (3rd Generation: 2014 - 2019)
Key Improvements: The third-generation Toyota Highlander Hybrid increases in size, offering accommodations for seven passengers on early models and eight later in the run. The styling is more dynamic, and more options are added, but the V6 hybrid engine carries over with a significant increase in power at 280 horsepower. Only Limited and Platinum trims are offered in the first few years, with additional lower-priced trims added after 2016. There are more safety systems in the form of additional driver-assists, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping, automatic high beams, a blind-spot monitor, and rear cross-traffic detection. The Entune infotainment system has a larger touchscreen interface but no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. New features include heated and ventilated seats, a panoramic moonroof, a 120-volt A/C outlet, Driver Easy-Speak intercom, a memory driver’s seat, and a heated steering wheel.
Model Updates: The 2017 Highlander gets a significant refresh. Its new face features a larger grille, a more powerful engine, and two new trims: LE and XLE. The Toyota Safety Sense driver-assist suite is made standard.
Toyota Highlander Hybrid (2nd Generation: 2008 - 2013)
Key Improvements: The second-generation Highlander Hybrid is much larger than the original, offering more interior space with an available third-row seat. The first-generation hybrid V6 powertrain carries over, gaining two more horsepower. The second-gen Highlander Hybrid has a more modern infotainment system, with some trims offering a touchscreen interface. The second row features a clever interchangeable middle seat or center console. New features include a flip-up rear liftgate window, a power liftgate, three-zone automatic air conditioning, proximity key fob entry and start, and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel.
Model Updates: For 2012, all Highlander Hybrid models have a third-row seat and rear climate controls. Meanwhile, 2013 brings a standard Entune multimedia system with built-in navigation.
Toyota Highlander Hybrid (1st Generation: 2006 - 2007)
The original Highlander Hybrid offers three-row seating for seven people, but in a smaller package than the generations that followed. Based on the Toyota Camry platform, the Highlander Hybrid provides a more car-like ride and handling. The hybrid powertrain comprises a 3.3-liter V6 and single or dual electric motors, which function as an all-wheel-drive system. Highlights for the original Highlander include heated front seats, JBL audio, touchscreen DVD navigation, two-row side curtain airbags, and leather upholstery.
